Question:so what's the best armour for a wizard? nearly all items i come across do not
give much ac-bonus or kill the magitial ability of my wizard.... how do others
overcome this problem?
Answer:
BTW i am under the level of a blank room with lots of monsters thanks to a wand
of digging used by one of the monsters, this means i could not get up anymore,
since all monsters are grouped at the stairways and as i climb up, i just have
enough hitpoints to go back down immediately, without beeing able to hit them
once.... any hint how to solve that one?
I usually play W's, with something like that I wouldprobably put on any good rings
(protection, gain strength?), or maybe even try to polymorph into something a
little stronger to make the climb. Also if you can get up the stairs and live for
one turn that is enough time to engrave the "E" work on the ground, as long as you
still have your Athame.
As for armour, I havn't found armour that works reall great for the Wizard. I try
to stick to light stuff untill he can actually carry anything, cloaks, hats, boots,
enchanted hawian shirts and the like. They don't seem to affect spell casting as
much (the metal helmets do but not like a full suit of ringmail). Scalemail is
also a decent full suit for a wizard to wear...
In Vanilla, metallic armour, except helms of brilliance, impinges your
spellcasting ability. So you'll be okay with leather or studded leather
armour or, better still, dragon scale mail. And don't wear metal
accessories -- though IMHO a shield of reflection is worth the cost to your
spellcasting, at least until you've genocided black dragons.
scroll / wand / spell of teleportation (use the wand/spell on
yourself) or level teleportation. If you play slashem quaff a potion
of invulnerability before going up and keep running on the level until
you either killed all enemies or reached the other stairs.
No, they are body armour (and don't exist in Vanilla, btw). As of 5E4 they're
all made of leather so I imagine they are also safe, but I haven't actually
checked. You can also add kicking boots to the list of exceptions for Slash'EM
along with iron boots. This _might_ be considered a buglette since one would
expect the exception to go with steel boots. I think we can probably live with
it, however. Vanilla solves the same problem with gauntlets of power by having
a description (riding gloves) that is not obviously metalic.
In Slash'Em, non-metallic body armour other than robes impedes
spellcasting if you are a Wizard or Healer, although not to the same
extent as metallic body armour would. Robes are always safe for
spellcasting, and a robe of power actually helps.
For beginning wizards, certainly, unless they wear gauntlets of power
which are about the worst thing you can have if you want to cast
spells. If you can get your strength up to 18-something early (find a
large beehive on the earliest possible level, for instance) and
scrolls of enchant armour are scarce, then a crystal plate mail might
be useful.
Actually the description for gauntlets of power is variable: it's
one of riding gloves, padded gloves, old gloves, and maybe some other
kind of gloves that I'm not recalling....
Yes, that's exactly the point. Gauntlets of power are
metallic (iron to be precise). If vanilla had a description of them that
was obviously metallic (iron clad gloves for example) then when the
descriptions were shuffled the gauntlets of power might be described as
padded gloves while gauntlets of dexterity might be described as iron clad
gloves. Not a problem you might think, except that gauntlets of power are
still made of iron and gauntlets of dexterity are still made of leather.
The solution that vanilla employes is to have a set of descriptions for
gloves (riding gloves, padded gloves, old gloves, and fencing gloves)
which don't imply any metalic or non-metalic material makeup. Thus, any
one of these can be made of iron without confusion.
This is where Slash'EM falls down since the boots described as steel boots
may actually be made of leather. This is somewhat confusing for the player,
but as I said, hardly the end of the world.
I think I need lessons in English; I seem to cause confusion wherever I go...
Why not replace the "steel boots" descr. with something else?
Can't imagine it'ld be too much work...
You are, of course, quite correct. I just didn't think it was worth worrying
Warren over such a minor bug. I don't like to change such things with fixes
myself; I don't want to interfere with what is really his baby. but I think,
given the amount of traffic this has generated, I will at least send him a
bug report.
