Question:I'm training for my second marathon. Last time the furthest I ran
in training was 19 miles and I managed the race in just under 4 hours
(I'm 49). A number of people have suggested that I should run the full
26 miles before the day, maybe a few weeks prior, but others have said
no. What do you advise and why?
Answer:
If you've had a look at my blog I think that its pretty obvious I do! I
really credit this stuff with getting me through the last marathon I
did and I feel even healthier this time around. Of course I still need
to train hard but I am no longer pulling muscles every other week or
coming down with colds due to being over-exposed to free radicals. Have
you come across Juice Plus+? If so, what is your opinion?
I haven't but I do est 4-5 portions a day of fruit , an Apple for
breaktime , couple of Bananas at lunch, an orange or another apple
after tea perhpas plums this time of year as TV snacks. Then there are
vegatables with meals like peas beans or carrots. Plus I take cod liver
oil , glucosamine and a Vit C fizzy drink in the morning. I can't see
the connection twixt the healthier eating and the pulled muscles though.
I think that the ideal is to eat your fruit and vegetables as the
actual product and not as a supplement but the sad reality is that we
just do not know how our f & v are being grown today, whether the soil
is depleted, how they were transported, and for how long were they
stored. Also the minimum amount is 5 a day and that is for minimum
health. I want maximum health and so I take this supplement which gives
me 17 a day and I feel great.
Regarding the issue of muscles not pulling any more I spoke to an
eminant doctor in Harley Street, London and told him what I was taking.
He 100% supported me and it was he that told me that I could expect
much less muscular damage now that I was eating more f&v and aiding it
with the JP+ supplements. He explained it in a lot of detail but I
think the summary was that I have many, many more anti-oxidants
flooding my system now (especially straight after running when I am
most vulnerable) and this feeds my whole body (muscles included) with
all the nutriants necessary for it to maintain peak health. I am not a
doctor but the evidence from my own experience is that he is correct.
There are many rigourous scientific studies related to this product (in
fact it is the most researched supplement in history) on the web site
at www.juiceplus.co.uk/+mm026962. Take a look and see what you think.
It may be apocryphal, but I've been led to believe that if you run much over
2 hours then you are probably doing more damage than good. So for training,
keep your long runs to between 2 and 3 hours, but with plenty of shorter
runs during the week.
No, I never ran the marathon distance in training, and wouldn't advise it,
but on my long runs I aimed to be on my feet for as long as my planned
marathon would take - usually around three hours. Like you, my maximum
training distance was roughly 19 miles which included around three thousand
feet of ascent.
Unlike you, I was in my mid fifties when I started marathon running and
relied on a normal diet which seemingly proved quite adequate without
further supplements. But you've got me thinking. If I'd used JuicePlus do
you reckon I could have knocked ½ hour off my marathon PB and gone sub 2½?
What appears to me important is that whatever the forum, a testimonial
should be genuine and free from bias. In any event, A person who has
only done one marathon is hardly in a position to be offering advice to
the public at large, or drawing conclusions about what got him through
his one and only marathon. A right thinking observer might conclude that
the whole purpose of his post was to peddle quack medicine from his
electronic covered wagon.
Hi runningfox, the short answer is that you probably would not improve
that much because 1/2 hour off of 3 hours is a massive drop. However, I
don't know if you took the training easy because of muscle pulls or
other effects of being an older runner. In that case, if you were able
to train without interuption who knows what time you might have been
able to achieve. I'm aiming for at least 15 minutes improvement this
time and having discovered JP+ Complete since my last race I'm
confident of at least that improvement. Whatever the improvement I am
100% confident that it would do you some good in your general health
anyway.

Network marketing is not.
I never sell anyone a franchise only the product which is still the
most researched supplement in the world. Dr Barrett's conclusion are
interesting and I don't have the scientific background to refute them
but I do know that the medical world is full of doctors who (probably
with the best intentions) poo-hoo anything that is not a prescription
drug. If I am suffering from a placebo effect then long may it continue
- I feel great and the improvement in a number of my vital signs is
measurable. And no - I never get a cold!
