Question: I'm a new (two months running) runner, attempting Jeff Galloway's
program of increasing mileage, etc. I am going to medical school in the
fall in St. Louis and have heard a rumor that there is a St. Louis
marathon. True? And when is it each year?
Answer:
Old information which someone may need to correct:
The St Louis Marathon is run on Thanksgiving day.
The past couple of years, the St. Louis Marathon (sponsored by the St.
Louis Track Club) has been run in October. The SLTC is in the phone book,
so give 'em a call. There used to be (maybe is again this year) a series
of classes to prepare runners for the marathon and a series of runs, too.
SLTC can give you the info. According to Runner's World the date of this
year's St. Louis Marathon is Oct. 26.
The other annual marathon in St. Louis is the Third Olympiad Memorial,
which follows pretty closely the course of the 1904 Olympic marathon.
It's in late February. Check with the running stores for an application
and information.
I've run both and I think both are very well run. The St. Louis marathon
is larger and flater, but the Third Olympiad takes you through a wide
range of neighborhoods (including Ladue where you may find people leaning
on their Rolls cheering you on).
