Question: I would like to run my first marathon this fall and was told that
Witchita,KS has a relatively flat course in Oct. However, I have been
unable to find any info. regarding the marathon. I would appreciate any
information and suggestions.
Answer:
Due to the flat course, this may be a good first marathon. Despite this,
you may find it easier to run a first marathon with more crowd support.
Also, with only 250 people in the race, you may get a little lonely on
the course. If you live in Wichita, the only large marathon anywhere
near you seems to be the Dallas White Rock Marathon. It is held in
December.

If you are willing to make the trip and are ready to run a fall
marathon, then it would be hard to beat the Chicago Marathon. It's as
flat as a pancake, the crowd support is superb, and the race
organization is top-rate. It will be held on October 24.

"October 17, 1999. The Wichita Marathon features a flat, double
out-and-back course along the scenic Arkansas River. The race attracts
approximately 250 participants to its start/finish line at one of the
most pleasant sites in the city, Central Riverside Park, from here, the
route travels two short loops around the park and then heads to the bike
path that parallels the Arkansas River. At the halfway point, the race
returns to Central Riverside Park before retracing the route. Aid
stations are positioned every 2 miles along the way. Refreshments and
massages are provided after the race. All entrants receive long-sleeve
T-shirts, and finishers receive completion awards. The top two males and
females earn small cash prizes. Age-group winners are also recognized. A
companion 5K walk/run takes place one-half hour after the marathon
start."
