Question:Who do you all think will win tonight in the men's marathon?
Answer:
Khannouchi is definitely a favorite, although local interviews he has done
continue to emphasize his recent back injury as a potential limiting factor
for his success. Tergat isn't entered in the marathon - actually, he isn't
shown as being entered in any World's event at all. Neither is Steinle.
The guy I'm curious about is Bong-ju Lee of South Korea. He won the Boston
Marathon, then immediately flew to Edmonton to spend 10 days running the
course. He's been here for the last month - actually training in St.
Albert where I live. I haven't seen him, but others have run past him.
St. Albert has some excellent hills which Lee was focusing on, recognizing
that the only significant and long hill at mile 18 might determine the
winner.
I don't think my flat -out sprinting speed would be fast enough to keep up
with a world-class marathoner
Anyone know why Tergat isn't running? Is it because the Kenyan athetics
association had an argument with him? I seem to remember when he was
interviewed shortly before London that his plan was to enter.
Anyway, got to go--I have a 4 mile + 404 yard race in an hour.
His training speed was reported as slow, but yes, the anecdotes were that
they passed him in the opposite direction. He has no English, but was very
friendly, even dropping in to the local running store at one point,
unannounced as it was told to me.
