Question:I want to give a try to a run and walk marathon.
If you have experienced it, I would like to have information about the
proportion
of run and walk.
I am thinking about a 15 minutes run and 1 minute walk.
Do you think it's o.k.?
Answer:
Or try a minute walk each mile.
The wisdom of run/walking a marathon is that it helps you from starting too
fast which only causes tremendous physical obstacles in the later miles of
a marathon.
As Sam Callan said he walks through the aid stations so as to get the
fluids in him and not all over him. With aid stations usually at a mile or
2 mile interval your walking would coincide with the walking throught the
aid stations.
I've taken people out and we've walked a marathon in 6 to 7 hours. A great
time visiting and talking. Also these people knew that finishing a
marathon would not be an issue. Gradually the running/walking a marathon
becomes more running/less walking and finally nearly all running/ minimal
walking.
For many people who go into a marathon only have run with little or no
walking, there is the fear that they won't be able to start up again. That
reason in itself might be a good motivator for running with some walking
done on a regular schedule.
