Question:Im really interested in running. i'd like to start running again. I used to
run cross country but since my best friends death i havent been able to run.
Please can someone help me to start running again. How do i start? what
should i do?
Answer:
Since you used to run cross country, I know you already know how to run.
Go to where there are other runners and walkers and start doing it.
Groups like Team in Training and National Aids Marathon Training
Program will teach you how to run, provide a mentor and coaches, and
provide group runs and training.
Go to a kick-off meeting and find out more about it and see if you are
interested. This is a great way to meet people and to raise money for
a good cause. There will also be many people in the group who are
grieving the passing of loved ones.
Or you can just strap on the shoes and get out there and run
today...then tomorrow do the same thing, one day at a time. Go where
there are other runners, find someone who is running about your pace,
and ask them if they mind if you run with them for awhile. Your
friend would probably want you to move forward with your own life.
Or you can join a gym...take a trial membership at your local club and
tell the trainers what your goals are...they will help you with a
training program and you can start running again on a treadmill. This
will help with weather conditions and interaction with other people.
you just start running .... well maybe, depending on your current
condition, walking or walking/running.
You want to start at about 30 minutes. Not three miles or two miles,
just 30 minutes. If you have to walk, all the way that's fine, if you can
run for one minute out of every two, that's even better, and if you can run
the full 30 minutes (and not end up sore the next day) that's great.
The point is if you are starting back, you are not starting where you
left off. Don't overdo it at the start. Take your time. No pain no gain
is no sense. You don't need pain.
Work on those 30 minutes until you can run the full distance, 3 to 5
times a week. When you can run the full distance, then start going a little
further until you are up to 45 minutes.
From there it depends on where you want to end up.
put on your sneakers, shorts and a shirt and get out the door. just
run. doesn't matter how long or how far. just get out there.
When man tries to imagine paradise on earth, the immediate result is a
very respectable hell.
I can help here. I think it goes "right, left, right, left"...........
Or is it "left, right, left, right"? In either case, make sure your
door is open first. Are there any other childhood skills you've
forgotten? Shoe tying? Bikes without training wheels? Long division?
Maybe you could use the force?
Is lack of knowledge the impediment, or is something else preventing
you from getting started?
If it's something else that's preventing you from starting, though,
post it so you can get specific advice to help you with that problem.
There just might be someone on this site who's a lot like you and can
help you out.
The step-off foot depends on who you marched with
If you marched with The Cadets, the "right, left, right, left..."
would work. For the rest of the marching world it's "left, right,
left, right....". Gee, and here I though Miss Thrope knew it all. I
am deeply saddened and disappointed. I don't know if I can read
another post in RR now.
Walk and run for 20 minutes at a time 3-5 times a week.
Time is more important than distance. Maybe you'll
cover 2/3 mile the first week mostly walking. Then you'll
cover twice that in the same time when you are mostly running.
Do this for 2-6 months, until it seems very easy.
It could take as long as six months for some people
to run continuously for 20 minutes, depending on age
and physical condition.
