Question:This may seem like a stupid question, but I was just thinking about it since today
my brother asked me in a jokingly fashion, since I have started running recently,
"Why don't you run the Boston marathon next year?"
I know this isn't possible, but say my goal was to run the 2003 Boston
marathon. How would one go about training for something like this? How do you
start?
Answer:
I joined "marathon training" program, put on by our *best* running store.
That doesn't mean I'm going to run a marathon, but I might if certain goals
are reached before the marathon.
I do have a real quick answer to your question. You train for a marathon by
running.
There were two girls that joined the marathon training group last year and
dropped out. The excuse I heard was: "They didn't know there would be so
much running." ;-)
In reality, there are many different levels you can train for a marathon.
But you won't be able to train as a competitor if your just a novice.
There are two possible ways: one is right foot first, the other is left foot
first! :-)
More seriously, there are plenty of sites out there on the web with
beginners marathon training programs - you could try
http://www.runnersworld.com or http://www.halhigdon.com for a couple of
fairly good ones.
Also, start by going to a running shop and explaining that you want to start
running and need some shoes - a good shop should be able to do the rest...
(hint: if they watch you run and recommend shoes based on your running style
this is good - if they ask you which colour/brand shoes you'd like most, go
to another shop).
