Question:I'm going to train for NY through the coming months. I recall someone
mentioning a book which is the virtual Marathoner's Bible. Anyone name
it?
Also, I wonder if anyone could project a good first-marathon goal. I've
been running on and off for just over a year. Recently, I'm running
10K's at 7 minutes/mile. What can I shoot for if I'm prepared to get
hardcore for the next six months?
Answer:
I don't know what book you're referring to, but hot off the presses
is Jeff Galloway's new book, Marathon! Marathon! takes everything
Galloway has been teaching for years in his classes and puts it all
together in one book. Marathon! can be ordered online from The
Athlete's Bookstore: http://www.stevenscreek/com/books/.
Other books which are "marathon-specific" are Hal Higdon's "Marathon -
The Ultimate Training and Racing Guide", and Richard Benyo's "Making
The Marathon Your Event." Noakes (recommended by Doug Freese in
another reply) is often called the Runner's Bible, and its definitely
an excellent reference book (but let's not re-open THAT thread, shall
we?), but it's not specifically a marathon book. Another excellent
book is "Training Distance Runners" by Martin and Coe, whose title
makes it sound like it's for coaches but its really as much or more
for "self-coached runners" like most of us.
I'm training for my first marathon book and have used Hal Higdon's book
"Marathon."
