Question:
Has anyone ever used Hal Higdon's Novice Training Program to complete a
Marathon?
I used to be a fairly dedicated runner, doing 8 miles a day four days a week
and completed a couple of half marathons. Since I married a few years ago,
though, I quit running and gained 35lbs.
I started jogging again about a year ago and was doing four miles three
times a week and started using Hal Higdon's 18 week Novice Program in hopes
of completing the Air Force Marathon in September. I have been following
it faithfully but am only on week 5, which is 10 miles for the long run and
a LONG way from Marathon level.
Just looking for feedback from anyone who may have used his method,
particularly at the novice level.
Answer:My training partner and I used it and found it to be a great program. My
friend ran a great marathon. I crashed, but it wasn't due to the program-
it as due to several days with almost no sleep leading up to it and then
lots of sweat and not enough electrolytes. Regardless, I'd highly recommend
the program, as well as "Marathon" by Hal Higdon. Read that 5 or so months
in advance- it dealt with diet, stress, running, injuries, prep for what to
bring to the race, etc. Well worth the read.
I used the novice training for my first marathon. It worked well for me
