Question:
I had some questions on warm winter running clothing. I normally wear a
Cool Max long sleeve shirt with a Hind (sort of like nylon) vest but when it
gets below 25 degrees I've been experimenting. I tried two Cool Max shirts
(1 over the other)and then the vest over the 2 shirts but recently I took a
100% Nylon Brooks wind breaker and put it over one Cool Max shirt and I
noticed that when I was done running and took off the Nylon jacket in my
house it was pretty wet on the inside. I was just curious if anybody has
ever tried running with one of these nylon only windbreaker jackets over the
Cool Max shirt or if two Cool Max shirts would work better, maybe they(cool
max) would breathe better, anybody ever tried these? Just curious what you
think about the 2 options? Thank you
Answer:Plain garden-variety nylon doesn't breathe - you need a fabric that is
porous to allow breatheability. This is why you were wet on the inside -
all the moisture your body generated stayed right there. In extreme cold,
this is a problem as it helps the onset of hypothermia - and this is the
case no matter what you wear underneath.
First trick is get a breathable fabric for the jacket. There are a few
brand names out there - checking my gear, "microft" is the popular one.
Under a breathable fabric, you can experiment with layers. Generally, thin
wicking material against the skin, thicker material as a second layer, then
fleece as a third layer (then the jacket). Mix & match.
