Question:
I am new to competitive or lap swimming. It has been something that I
have been envious of for years, and now I am trying it out while training
for a triathlon.
I have a problem, after swimming about 30 meters, I hit that little zone
where I want to breathe deeper, faster, and harder. I hit a wall with
swimming well and have troubles finishing the lap, either coming up
completely out of breath, or sputtering with a lung full of water. I am
working with a coach, and he says that "I just need to deal with it".
Can you folks give me some tips so that I can break through this place. I
am obviously strong enough to swim much farther, but can't with this
breathing problem.
Answer:i've been swimming for 6 or 7 years, been on a masters team for 5. When i
started swimming the mile it took me 32 min. i now do a mile in 22.30! But
i built up, or would that be down, to it. Try swimming slower, you need to
breath deeper when you sprint, need that oxygen to get to your legs so you
can kick harder. Distance is different. So, even if you want to sprint,
slow down for now, take the time you need to get to the wall, you'll speed
up and go farther as you make your body get used to the oxygen it needs
and can get while swimming.
