Question:
Looking for some suggestions about best, comfortable, shoes for marathoning.
Did my first marathon last summer in NB 829s and felt good when done. Bought
new 830 model and don't seem to feel as good. I am 6'5, 175, very mild
pronation. Any ideas?
Answer:I swear by the Adidas Taper. Lighter than pretty much everything in
the "performance trainer" category and a little heavier than a racing
flat. Adequate cushioning and stability (there is some medial
posting). These shoes feel so smooth and fast. Shoes like this
don't last a long time, I get about 250 or maybe 300 miles out of
them. I don't use them all the time, probably about 30-40 percent of
my mileage. A person should be a pretty efficient, fast runner to use
them. If you have a heavy footstrike or are kind of a plodder, look
elsewear. My other trainer is the Nike Air Span, also a very smooth
shoe, but heavier and maybe just a touch too cushy for me. I'm 5'10"
and 156 lbs, age 46, with fairly flat feet (but I don't pronate much)
and my most recent marathon was a 3:08. Another good shoe that I've
used is the New Balance 330. They were lighter but had sort of a stiff
feel to them. I really liked them but for me, the Taper is a superior
shoe.
