Question:
Just wondering if anyone has any advice on what type of bike I should be
riding if my main source of competitions is Triathlon? Road bike or go to a
tri-specific bike?
Answer:I run sprint and Olympic length triathlons on a road bike. Road bikes handle
better and are more versatile than are tri bikes. Tri bikes have a steeper seat
angle than do road bikes which is supposed to save the hamstrings for the run.
However, this puts the rider in a more forward aero position and makes the bike
less stable in corners. Also many believe that the advantage of this is really
only significant in the longer Iron Man length distances. If you train solo on
strait roads and your only purpose is triathlon then a tri bike would be OK.
This is the way many triathletes train and why they usually don't become
particularly good bike riders. If you want to group ride and maybe do some
occasional road racing as well as triathlon then definately go with a road
bike.
Do get aerobars, but if with a road bike only get the shorter ones such as
JohnCobb's "big slam" bars or Profile Jammer GT.
