Question:
For a person who recently took up walking everyday, what time period could a
person look at to get up to speed to walk a marathon given a training
program, etc. ?? Is two months realistic?? or more like 4 ??
Answer:Depends...what are your goals? To finish? To walk the fastest? To be a
competitive racewalker? What kind of shape are you in? How old are you? How's
your mental focusing?
I trained for eight weeks to walk my first half-marathon this February (I've
done a second one since then). I adapted a marathon running schedule, building
distance, then tapering off the week before the race. It was grueling to get
the mileage up to 10 and 12 when the weather was below 30F!!! I also changed my
weight training to work on my strength and endurance, changed my eating habits
to add more carbs the last couple of weeks before the race and drank a h*ll of
a lot more water than my usual 12 glasses a day!
It was worth it, though. I wasn't fast, but I finished, with no injuries and
feeling well.
