Question:
There is 10 weeks left after my last tri on the last weekend in
September. I wouldn't be able to dedicate myself to full marathon
training until 10 weeks before the marathon.
My current volume is about 10 hrs/week on average. Also, do you guys
use cycling and swimming to cross train when preparing for a marathon?
If so, do you do this on the rest day or easy running days...]
Answer:Here's an interesting article on the merits of cross training:
http://www.runningtimes.com/issues/01nov/cross.htm
Given the fact that you're already in competition shape for swimming
and cycling, thus getting maximal cross-training benefits from these
activities, I'd say keep on doing them through you're marathon
training, but less often than you are now.
The reaon for cross-training for running is to get most or all or the
benefits of frequent long runs without as much risk of injury. You'll
still need to do the long runs if you cross-train, but with less
frequency and more time to recover.
